Reading Champions
“If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book yet.” J K Rowling
At Powers Hall Academy, we think reading is very important. ‘Reading Champions’ is a reading challenge to complement our current reading scheme in Key Stage 2 (Accelerated Reader), and encourage wider reading. The children are encouraged to read a selection of at least 20 books from the recommended books lists below. The appealing list of books includes a range of genres including a selection of storytime read-alouds, gripping page-turners, thought-provoking stories from around the world, laugh-out-loud books, picturebooks, graphic novels, poetry collections and non-fiction choices.
These are recommended book lists not exclusive book lists and the pupils are encouraged to make their own book choices but also consider books from the list. These books can be read independently or become a shared read with an adult. All pupils will receive a copy of their relevant year group checklist at the start of the year to give you an idea of some books that shouldn't be missed. It is not a competition to see how quickly pupils complete the list as they have all year to do so.
Once a pupil reads at least 20 books from their Year Group Recommended Reading list, and evidences this in their Pupil Planner, they will be awarded a Reading Champion Badge and entered into a prize draw at the end of the year.
