Religious Education

How can we help children develop respect, understanding and curiosity about the beliefs and values of others in an increasingly diverse world?

At Witham Oaks Academy, Religious Education plays a vital role in preparing pupils for life beyond school. Through a rich and reflective curriculum, children develop an understanding of different religions and worldviews, recognising both similarities and differences. We aim to nurture respectful, open-minded individuals who appreciate diversity and are equipped to challenge discrimination and promote shared values. RE also provides meaningful opportunities for personal reflection, supporting pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural development.

Children learn through a carefully structured curriculum, based on the Essex SACRE Agreed Syllabus and delivered through the Saffron Academy Trust scheme. This approach ensures consistency, progression and high-quality learning experiences for all pupils. Teaching is rooted in enquiry, enabling children to explore key questions, discuss ideas and make connections between beliefs and their own lives. Complex concepts are broken down into manageable steps, ensuring all pupils can engage, think deeply and succeed.

Our curriculum:

  • Develops pupils’ understanding of a range of religions and worldviews.
  • Encourages respect, empathy and appreciation of diversity.
  • Promotes critical thinking through enquiry-based learning and discussion.
  • Supports spiritual, moral and cultural development through reflection.
  • Explores beliefs through three key lenses, ensuring depth and balance.
  • Breaks learning into clear, structured steps to support all learners.
  • Builds knowledge progressively across the school.
  • Prepares pupils to be thoughtful, informed and respectful citizens in modern Britain.

In line with the Essex SACRE 2022 Syllabus, the SAT RE Scheme explores Religious Education through three distinct lenses.
