Computing

How can we give children the confidence and ability they need to succeed in a world that revolves around technology?

At Witham Oaks Academy, we deliver a rich and detailed sequential curriculum for ICT that’s all about challenging children and encouraging them to work independently. This builds in 'skills' lessons, of course, that teach children how to use hardware and software, but we also use ICT capabilities to support teaching across the curriculum, particularly in English, Maths and Art.

Children use IT as they would any tools such as a pencil or pen – it is not in addition to what we do, rather an extension. We have mapped the best platforms and apps for children to work with, and added a clearly defined e-safety strand that meets government requirements and keeps pace with the progression of learning at every stage.

Our curriculum:

  • Develops children's understanding of fundamental computing concepts, including algorithms, programming, data representation, and computer systems.
  • Encourages problem-solving and logical thinking through coding and computational tasks.
  • Teaches safe and responsible use of technology, including understanding online safety and digital citizenship.
  • Provides opportunities to use a range of software and hardware to create, communicate, and collaborate.
  • Builds progressively from foundational skills in early years to more complex applications by the end of Key Stage 2.
  • Ensures children understand the social, cultural, and economic impacts of computing and digital technology.
  • Aligns with the national curriculum requirements, ensuring all children receive a broad and ambitious computing education.
