As a study of the past and the past's legacies in the present, History is inescapable.
At Witham Oaks Academy, our sequential approach to the curriculum really lends itself to teaching History chronologically, so that children have a clear framework for organising their understanding of the past.
Along the way, our aim at every stage is to go above and beyond the basic learning expectations. We want to inspire children to think like historians, to work with evidence, argue for their own conclusions, and learn to distinguish between historical facts and the way people interpret them. Above all, pupils get to understand more about themselves as individuals and as members of society.
Our curriculum:
- Develops children's chronological understanding and awareness of significant events, periods, and people in British and world history.
- Encourages children to use historical enquiry skills, including asking questions, analysing evidence, and interpreting different perspectives.
- Builds a rich vocabulary of historical terms and concepts to help children articulate their understanding clearly.
- Provides opportunities for children to engage with a wide range of sources, including artefacts, documents, and stories, to develop critical thinking.
- Emphasises the importance of making connections between past and present, helping children understand the impact of history on modern life.
- Ensures progression by sequencing content thoughtfully, allowing children to build on prior knowledge and deepen their understanding over time.
- Incorporates time for consolidation and practice, enabling children to retain key historical knowledge and develop their analytical skills.
