At Witham Oaks Academy, our approach to teaching science is highly child-centred. For us, it’s not just about delivering the facts and experiments required by the National Curriculum. We always push beyond that.
Crucially, our sequential Science curriculum is designed to encourage children both to understand how they are making progress and to build their confidence. The goal is to get them to work independently and collaboratively so that they can articulate, present and discuss their learning confidently. That’s when they get really inspired by the wonders of the world and motivated to take science further.
Our curriculum:
- Builds progressively on key scientific knowledge and concepts, ensuring children develop a secure understanding at each stage.
- Integrates ‘working scientifically’ skills throughout, encouraging children to observe, classify, investigate, and analyse data using a variety of scientific methods.
- Emphasises the importance of spoken language to help children articulate scientific ideas clearly and confidently.
- Provides ample opportunities for practical, hands-on activities that connect theory with real-world applications.
- Ensures continuity from through Key Stage 2, allowing children to build connected and lasting scientific knowledge.
- Supports children to understand the relevance of science in everyday life and its impact on future innovation and society.
