At Witham Oaks Academy, we believe mathematics provides powerful tools for thinking, reasoning and problem solving. Our curriculum is designed to develop confident, fluent mathematicians who can apply their knowledge to a wide range of real-life situations. We aim to foster a positive attitude towards mathematics, ensuring all pupils become resilient, curious and independent learners who enjoy the challenge of mathematical thinking.

Children are taught through a carefully sequenced, mastery-based curriculum using NCETM materials. Learning is built on the principles of fluency, reasoning and problem solving, with a strong emphasis on deep understanding. Through a structured approach, pupils move between concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, enabling them to make connections and develop secure conceptual knowledge. Whole-class teaching ensures all pupils access the same high-quality learning, with timely support to address misconceptions and deepen understanding.

    Our curriculum:

    • Develops fluency through regular practice and secure understanding of key concepts.
    • Encourages mathematical reasoning, enabling pupils to explain, justify and prove their thinking.
    • Promotes problem solving through a range of real-life and investigative contexts.
    • Uses a structured CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) approach to deepen understanding.
    • Builds knowledge progressively through carefully sequenced units.
    • Embeds the use of precise mathematical language to support communication and reasoning.
    • Ensures misconceptions are identified and addressed quickly.
    • Supports pupils to make connections across different areas of mathematics.
    • Develops automatic recall of key facts to support efficient problem solving.
    • Provides consistent models, representations and stem sentences to scaffold learning.

Through this approach, pupils leave Witham Oaks Academy as confident mathematicians who can think logically, reason effectively and apply their knowledge with independence and accuracy.
