Welcome to India Class (6I)

Class Teacher: Mrs Forsyth

Learning Support Assistant: Miss Shaikh

Here is our weekly timetable for the summer term, although it may be subject to change. Our class book is currently Head Kid which is being read by our Reading Ambassadors.

Every day you should arrive with your planner, reading book, fun book and filled water bottle.  Please ensure that your water bottle remains named, especially after washing.  Thank you.

Our PE days have changed and are now both Thursday and Friday.  Children should arrive at school in their PE kits comprising black shorts, plain white t-shirts and black trainers. No items should have any branded logos please.  Please remember that earrings cannot be worn for PE and should be removed at home if your child is unable to do this themselves. All long hair should be tied back for PE.  A black tracksuit is also permitted.  Even though the children arrive in their kits, please could you name each item.   Thank you.

Homework - will be given out on a Monday.  Homework comprises: Times Table Rockstars (at least 3 minutes per day across the week); spelling; reading aloud at least three times a week (please record in your planner); a retrieval or project task (this will vary week on week) plus a SATS style practise of maths, GPS or reading comprehension.  There is an opportunity to complete homework on a Wednesday lunch time at 12.35pm.  If you are unable to complete your homework during the week, then there will be a Catch Up club on Tuesday lunchtime at 12.10pm.  Homework should be returned the following Monday.

Statutory spelling for Year 6

Geography - fieldwork will take place in June 2025

Art - This project teaches children about the trailblazing Black artists which depict the history of their culture and backgrounds; incorporating subjects like racism.

Science - This project teaches children about evolution of species, adaptation and how features are passed on through generations to ensure survival of species.

Music - Children will now focus their attention on learning the songs for the end of term play.  Star Warts: The Umpire Strikes Back

History - This project teaches children about Africa past and present, with a particular focus on Benin. It traces the development of the slave trade and explores Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, the causes and consequences of the European colonisation of Africa and the worldwide communities that make up the African diaspora.

Today we created a mountain scene by following a tutorial with artist, Bob Ross.

An amazing two days of creativity for our DT: Make Do and Mend

Today we started our new art focus - abstract art. The children explored how to create abstract art using paint and bubbles, as well as creating their own versions of Piet Mondrian and Paul Klee.

We had a fantastic day out at Hanningfield Reservoir where we followed a Wind in the Willows trail and then took part in pond dipping.

India class investigated the brightness of a bulb when additional voltage was added to a circuit. They used an app to measure the brightness in lux.

Having been inspired by our trip to First Site, we explored the Enchanted Owl by Kenojuak Ashevak. We then created stencils and art works inspired by the Inuit print making. Our thanks go to Ramsden Mills who generously supplied the carpet tiles - thank you.

Visit to First Site to explore artwork and take part in a printing workshop relating to Inuit art.

Inspired by Inuit Carving we created soap sculptures of animals found in the Arctic.

Today we walked around Witham investigating geography settlement patterns of the area of the past compared to the present.

As part of our healthy eating/lifestyle investigation, we made wholemeal bread and tomato soup. We then compared the bread with shop brough bread and evaluated the soup.

Today Year 6 re-enacted a battle across No Man's Land to capture the flag. Then they re-enacted the infamous Christmas Truce when the game of football was played. Our thanks go to the team of trench builders - thank you so much. The children, albeit dirty (and we apologise for this) have a fabulous time retrieving their learning from last term.

As part of our DT/science topic children investigated different food stuffs to find out which contained above average amounts of sugar, salt or fat.

Last week Year 6 took part in a national literacy poetry Remembrance event. Today, we visited the War Memorial as part of the Remembrance observance. There were many people there including representatives from local secondary schools and the Mayor of Witham. The children behaved impeccably and observed the two minute silence, joining in with the singing of the National Anthem and laying our wreath.

Today Year 6 started their new writing unit based on A Christmas Carol with the opportunity to research Charles Dickens and play games of the Victorian era. The children made up their own rules and competitions and found that electronic games are not the only way to have fun!!

Sharing the reflections of our Paul Nash inspired World War One art work with parents in a short assembly. Thank you to all the attendees at the assembly; your time is very much appreciated.

Taking part in the Sponsored Welly Walk spotting items of nature along the way

What was life like in a World War One trench? This was the enquiry question which the children answered by creating a trench and labelling it.
