6 India
Welcome to India Class (6I)
Please remember your equipment each day: filled water bottle, pupil planner and reading book. Each day starts with conversation over breakfast and activities to support and promote well being.
Our PE days are Monday and Friday. Children should arrive at school in their PE kits comprising black shorts, white t-shirts and black trainers. For this term they will also need shin pads. No items should have any branded logos please. Please remember that earrings cannot be worn for PE and should be removed at home if your child is unable to do this themselves. All long hair should be tied back for PE. A dark/black tracksuit is also permitted. Thank you.
Homework - will be given out on a Monday to be returned the following Monday. There is an opportunity to complete homework at school on a Wednesday lunchtime at 12.30pm-1.00pm. Homework comprises: Times Table Rockstars (at least 3 minutes per day across the week); spelling on Ed Shed; reading aloud at least three times a week (please record in your planner); a retrieval or project task (this will vary week on week).
Year 6 Activities: Cooking - meanwhile those children enjoying activities week in school spent Monday completing computing and sports challenges. Today (Tuesday) they spent making smoothies, cheese scones and pizzas. Some were more palatable than others!! Thank you to Mrs Stoneham, Mrs Brown and Miss Shaikh.
Year 6 Activities: Tuesday Go Ape - despite the rain, drizzle, dampness and cold weather everyone seemed to enjoy the day. So many children showed the "Power of Yet" which was a delight to see and encourage. Many children doing things they hadn't done before but tried anyway. A Big Thank You must go to the centre staff who were brilliant with all the children.
Year 6 Activities: Monday - Mersea Boating Lake. Today saw many children overcome fears as they challenged themselves to a "It's knockout" escapade floating bouncy castles, kayaking and paddle boarding. There were splashes, thrills and spills - including those from Mr Beavis, Mr Shayler and Miss Elrick! The staff were amazing in supporting the children and a big well done to everyone - even the weather was perfect.
We finished this half term with a DT flow day where we investigated bridge builders and designs. Having learned a little bit about why we have bridges, their uses and a few famous bridges, we set about testing different designs. After evaluation, we came up with a group design to demonstrate stability. We were given a set of building materials and the bridge which held the most number of 2p coins was declared the winner.
History - This project teaches children about the causes, events and consequences of the First and Second World Wars, the influence of new inventions on warfare, how life in Great Britain was affected and the legacy of the wars in the post-war period.
Art - This project teaches children about the genre of environmental art. They study how artists create artwork that addresses social and political issues related to the natural and urban environment. Children work collaboratively to create artwork with an environmental message.
Science - This project teaches children about the way that light behaves, travelling in straight lines from a source or reflector, into the eye. They explore how we see light and colours, and phenomena associated with light, including shadows, reflections and refraction.
DT - This project teaches children about remarkable engineers and significant bridges, learning to identify features, such as beams, arches and trusses. They complete a bridge-building engineering challenge to create a bridge prototype.
Geography - Children analyse data and carry out fieldwork to find out about local road safety. They study patterns of human settlements and carry out an enquiry to describe local settlement patterns.
Thank you so much for completing the holiday homework - it was delightful to see so many of you engaging with the various activities. I hope you enjoyed them.
Our experience day saw children come dressed as evacuees. We watched a video clip of people recounting their tales of their own evacuations. Some were good and really enjoyed it; others less so. We then researched how they felt and some of the activities they undertook. Finally a drama activity where children left their parents at the train station, culminating in a song "We're Going To The Country". Thank you for making a huge effort with your costumes, you all looked fabulous.
